Congress Should Grow the Country to Match Labor Needs — Don Louis's Position

Every town in South Carolina has help-wanted signs in the windows. The honest answer isn't open borders or closed borders — it's lawful work, secure borders, and a merit-based system that actually fills the jobs.

Republicans have demonstrated that the border can be effectively closed and managed, which is a significant achievement. However, they haven't addressed key questions, particularly about how to fill open jobs across the country. Everywhere I go, I see help-wanted signs, and many people worldwide are eager to work in America and support our economy. The company I managed often had dozens of vacancies, which put a strain on our team with overtime. Most businesses can't delay products or services because of staffing shortages.

It's clear that Democrats have permitted people to cross the border illegally. Who should be held accountable? Certainly not the brave individuals who have risked everything—leaving their homes and families—to pursue opportunity in the greatest country in the world. Instead, Democrats must take responsibility for failing to secure the border and for enabling entry through funding, services, and court protections for those who have crossed illegally.

We provide money to Americans who are not working. We offer so much that some conclude their effective wage isn't worth the effort of working full time. I have family members in this situation. These giveaways need to stop. Abuse of disability benefits is widespread.

What are practical solutions to immigration? We must secure borders, deport undocumented offenders without appeals, and cut funding that causes Americans to avoid work or receive taxpayer money illegally.

We should also safeguard lawful immigrants with proper documentation from fear. America needs to fill many vacant jobs, and our demand for more, better, and faster services continues to grow.

The 2026 DHS shutdown results from disagreements over immigration policy, emphasizing the need for bipartisan cooperation. Both parties share blame—two wrongs don't make a right. The border should always remain secure. Illegals who break the law should be deported. Families who are working and law-abiding should be left alone to pursue the American Dream. Often, when rules change, people who exceed certain age limits are grandfathered into the old rules. There is a precedent.
