Grow or Die

Every person, business, and country is doing one of two things at any given moment: growing or dying. America has been coasting. It's time to choose growth again.

Grow or Die

It is a simple concept. People, religious organizations, businesses and nations are either growing or dying. Each day we lose millions of skin cells. And we grow more. If we don’t, we are dying.

All businesses and service providers serve people. The more people they serve the more they grow. Grow or die. The US population needs to grow. Many jobs exist to serve others. The issue is how do you grow? We are not imperialistic, so we won’t grow by conquering and creating new States. In the US, we are growing. But not by much.

When comparing births and deaths we are growing less than 0.1%. Yet, as a nation we require more services, including healthcare, technology, delivery, food choices, entertainment, recreation, education and home maintenance. All these service industries require people to serve people. When you have rapidly growing demand for services and 0.1% growth in population, it results in help wanted signs everywhere. Automation obviously can’t keep up with the goods and service demand growth.

What is the solution? Two choices. Accept less or worse products or services, or add to the workforce. I don’t know anyone who would be happy giving with worse products and services. To shrink is to die as a nation or organization.

We should never have a labor shortage in the US. Yet the company I managed always had open positions due to growth that outpaced our ability to hire and train. The labor pool wasn’t deep enough. We lost employees who didn’t want overtime. We worked hard to create a positive work environment and a pay and benefits package at the top of the local scale.

To add to the US workforce we should allow targeted immigration. There are many in the world who would be delighted to live and work in the US. We should let employers recruit immigrants, We should allow a low cost way to get sponsored work permits and an if/then plan to earn citizenship. If you come and remain employed for a period of 5 years, and live within our laws, then you can apply for citizenship and follow the process. Without paying $10,000. Congress should enact a way to do that.

Our Congress has a decision to make. Do we want to grow or die as a country? The answer is obvious. The need to find middle ground is obvious. But our Congress has made many (not all) Republican and Democrats become zealots who view party lines as religion. We need more independent minded people in Congress. People who can negotiate a budget, keep the government open, and control entry to the US in a way that fuels growth. Let’s grow!
